I had my board and rig separate in the rollers off the tip of Brooks Island
during a jibe. My sailing buddy was jibing right with me. He never saw it
happen. The board shot out from under my feet, down wind, down wave, and I
was left holding the sail. I laid the sail in the water, swam like mad,
and caught the board. I hollered for my buddy. He never heard me. I
paddled back to the sail which was floating there where I left it, in spite
of its needle mast. (Whew! When I dropped the sail, I thought it would be
gone.) I reconnected the mast base and uni with no sweat, much to my
surprise, and sailed in to change out the universal. I think the reason I
was able to reconnect them was that the uni was pretty old and not too
stiff. Apparently the cup wears down and with too much play can just pop
out of the mast base. I had made sure when launching that day that the pins
were properly popped in place.

My rules are:
1) Drop everything and go for your board.
2) Once in a while, go swimming, swimming fast for practice. (I've had my
whole rig disappear over several waves more than once and I've always caught
it. Whew!)
3) Once in a while, go paddle your board--that's not easy for me and I get
tired fast.
(I get enough opportunity to swim my whole rig in, so that's not on my
practice list.)
