That part is usually called the "hourglass".

Each time I rig I bend the hourglass and look for cracks. I make sure I
have several in the car so I can just switch to a good one when one
turns up cracked.
Despite this, I have broken three this year - Chinook had a bad batch.
Each time the webbing around the hourglass held fine and sailing in
was no problem.

Seems like I usually get about 2 years from an hourglass.
In the bad batch, I got 1-10 sessions.
