I had this daydream also.

Right after picturing how cool it would be to launch in clean strong
wind and closer to the channel, I start getting these images:

  o Security. Remember the gulf war shut down? We'd be locked out
    in a heartbeat.

  o Plane crashes. Can you imagine airport officials explaining on
    the evening news why the plane that slid off the runway also took
    out 20 people and a 100 parked cars?

  o Turbulence. Ever see the water spouts that form a few hundred
    feet off the end of the runway at Embassy? Can you imagine what
    they're like right at the end (or along the side) of the runway?

    So much for clean wind.
