The locals often hang out at the Ledbetter Beach north of the main pier.
Usually barely enough wind for big shortboard during summer.

I'm not sure about software engineers. There are quite a few small to
medium biomedical and electro-mechanical companies in SB. Lot of the
professors and students from UCSB work at these places. UCSB engineering
employment center should be a good place to gather information (# of
engineers in town, pay, etc) since they work closely w/ the local employers.
