I love the Saxo 270. I traded in my Veloce 278 on blind faith without having
ever had a ride on the 270. I was nervous about the leap of faith, but Ken
Hartz the Bic rep swore I wouldn't be sorry. The first day I rode the 270 I
had a big grin on. It is smaller than the 278 ( 95 l vs. 104 l ), but it
planes up almost as quickly. It is easier to jump and has a little more flip
for chop. The board is fun from 6.0 cruising down to 4.0 cranking and turns
well. They seem to have totally fixed their strap twist problems as I have not
had to mess with the straps in over 20 days of sailing on the board. The non-
skid is starting to go where it was sprayed over decals which is no big deal
for me since I'm a bootie sailor, but it might be an issue for a barefoot
sailor. I like the size a lot and figure I'll sail this board 80% of the time
even though I have an 8'6" Seatrend for the monster days and plan on finding a
130 liter board for the lightdays.

> How does it handle the waves?

I am not a true wave sailor, still exploring and just starting to check it
out, so I can't evaluate the board as a serious wave board. The quick
acceleration seems to make it easy to get to the spot where the wave is
starting to get sweet, but that may also be a detriment on the face. I wasn't
carving enough on the monster swells yesterday and kept outrunning them. That
was a blast untiI woul look back over my shoulder at the tops getting foamy
and wonder whether one of the damn things would actually break or not.

> How does it go upwind?

The stock fin that comes with the board is excellent and the board points well
for the size and shape. I was able to get from Crissy up to the South Tower on
a 5.2 and the Saxo yesterday when most of the crowd was getting flooded
downwind. The board is for me an ideal compromise between bump and slalom. It
is fun in the chop but still will get up and go. I know if I had been on my
Seatrend 8'6", I would never have made it any distance upwind even though it
is less than 10% smaller in terms of volume.

> Can you uphaul on it?

I find that the board is both sloggable and uphaulable for me (175 lbs), but
it is a close call on the uphaul. I think a season or two back I might not
have been able to uphaul it because my balance and anticipation weren't as
good. I have found that I can tack, heli-tack, and sink-nose tack it about as
easily as a larger board as long as there is a enough breeze to keep the sail
lightly powered.

If you want to demo a Saxo 270 and sail Crissy or Larkspur, keep an eye out
for Ken Hartz or e-mail him at RedKen2@aol.com.-DeleteThis He drives a white van with the
ABK Logo and a Hotsails sticker on the back and is about 6'2" with short red
hair. He carries a lot of demo boards and would probably be glad to let you
ride one. I also think they have a Saxo 270 demo board at Windsports in
Larkspur where I bought mine. For the price, I don't think you can beat it.
