============= Wed 13 Aug 97 - 3rd - 5.4/257 (186#)

Hit 3rd on the Standard Rig. It was sometimes a bit light, but mostly
well-powered. 3-4' swell despite the flood. A nice session.

============= Fri 15 Aug 97 - 3rd - 5.4/257 (186#)

Michael and I sailed 3rd. The fog (1000-foot clouds, actually) could be
seen in a line from SFO towards Hayward. This is much more common at Coyote;
there tends to be strong wind in front of and under the clouds, and very
light wind to the sides. So we rigged our Standard Rig and slogged
out through the light wind inside - I had to slog most of the way to the
channel. Once there, the reward was as expected - the wind was fine and
the 3-4' swell was poorly organized, but provided great ramps on both
port and starboard.

Michael, unfortunately, broke his sail's head strap on about the third
reach and had to slog back in with his floppy "reefed" sail. After
fixing it, he slogged back out, but we failed to connect and he soon
decided to go back in. He at least got close to the launch.

I headed back in around 5:00 since it seemed to be backing off in the
channel. I got in about 1/4 mile in from the channel (about 1/4 mile
upwind of the channel marker) when the wind really died. I swam some
and hula'd some, and then a light wind returned - from the southwest,
about 90 degrees to the normal direction. Suddenly, "downwind" was no
longer on this side of the Bay! This motivated a fairly intense hula
session. I finally walked the last 1/4 mile and landed at the exit
ramp by the point where the bridge takes off (a first for me). About a
dozen of us fetched up at the last two exits ramps. Michael came down
and gave me a ride back - it was 5:50 by that time.
