Hi Ed:
One of the solutions that I have used is to screw 1X4's to the studs
( vertically) and then purchase 1/2" pipe flanges and 1/2" x 20" precut
and prethreaded pipe from your local hardware store. The screw the flanges
to the 1x4's at the desired spacing and then thread the 20" pipe pieces
into the flanges and presto instant rack...

P.S. you can finish the ends of the pipe with caps...
and use pipe foam for pads...
