I agree with David.

At two weeks you are kind of at the break-even point financially -
so a lot is personal preference of how attached to your own gear you
are and how much hassle do you want to deal with.

One thing to consider is taking some items and not others. One time
I took sails, mast base, universal and a boom in a big sail bag for
free. Bought and sold a used mast at $25 loss. And rented a board.
Which all worked out pretty well and saved some $$$.

Second wind has great gear and great prices although their customer
service is not so great. Hawaiian Island Surf and Sport has great
customer service (in my opinion, although some others hate them) but
is a bit pricier.

Jan,

Having done it both ways several times (but Maui rent and Kona carry
- due to gear availability differences), I'd suggest renting for
Maui. Particularly if you want gear flexibility and/or to try new
stuff.

For two weeks I'd also suggest pre-negotiating a package deal via
email. I did so with Second Wind and got two complete rigs and a
board for about what you indicate (as I recall anyway), plus easy
exchanges if wind required different board. Then I took along a
sail/mast/extension (easy to carry - call them a tarp) and had three
on-site sails essentially rigged at all times.

Packing gear, getting to and from airports, and dealing with
airlines was always MAJOR hassle - even pre-9/11. OTOH, nothing
like having your own board for comfort.
