I've done both too, and I will always prefer the carry. But then again I
lugged my windsurfing gear all over europe on foot/bus/plane so you know I'm
a bit of a sucker. I just like my equipment, that's why I bought it in the
first place.

OTOH conditions are different in maui than in the bay area so you don't
always want the same gear - so renting can be an excellent option. One
thing I would definitely do though - bring harness lines. I know it sounds
stupid, but dealing with those damn adjustable harness lines is my number
one frustration with rental gear.
