For history, look for an old guy...

Windsurfer went around the farallones in 1980, started from Crissy,
ended at Crissy. A boat went with him, but assistance was not required.
I read the story years ago, but I couldn't find it today on the Internet
or in my piles of forgotten magazines. I did find the obituary of a
sailor who died too soon.

About the Farallones trip - first half (out) is not much fun, aailing
hard on the wind with waves coming over the bow of the boat. Can be
very wet, foggy, bouncy, pounding. But! after you round the islands the
whole thing changes. Strong wind coming over the port aft quarter, big
waves to ride. I bet the kiters had a blast coming in! (unless the wind
was dead aft, might be weird on a kite).

Kite in from the Farallones? Terrific!

Some corrections to this obit. Farallones are about 27 miles from the
coast, so round trip is about 54 miles. Solano is in Albany, not
Oakland. This is from the Brown Alumni Magazine.

Shimon-Craig A. Van Collie '72, of Berkeley, Calif.; Feb. 28, of cancer.
He was a writer, sailor, and accomplished dancer. He adopted the name
Shimon after a trip to Israel in 1975. He published four books on
sailing, tennis, and banking, and also wrote more than 700 articles on
subjects ranging from sailing to finance to interracial relationships.
In 1972 he placed fifth at the U.S. Olympic trials for sailing and in
1980 he became the only person to windsurf out to, around, and back from
the Farallon Islands (about fifty miles off the California coast); he
was raising money to ease world hunger. He was named "king of carnival"
and grand marshal of the 1998 Solano Stroll in Oakland, Calif. Survivors
include his parents, Ruth and H.A. Van Collie, 14 Comstock Ln., Wilton,
Conn. 06897; and a son.
