Subject: Tues at 3rd

============= Tue 28 Aug 01 - 3rd - 4.7/257 (196#) 3:30-5:30

22 knots at 2:00 got me out of the office, and 24-27 knots from 3:00 to
5:00 made me happy!

Water was fairly choppy, but also had big swells, even as it turned to
flood.

Around 6:00 a Coast Guard chopper came around and started cruising
along the shore at 3rd. They took 4 or 5 turns right next to shore,
pissing off the kiters, and then landed on the bikepath upwind of the
ramps.

They said they looking for a windsurfer with a red sail reported in
distress at Coyote Pt by "someone with a cell phone". They knew this
was not Coyote Pt, but did not explain why they were at 3rd.

One of the kiters took it upon himself to inform the Coastie in rather
harsh terms that it was unsafe, though he later agreed the downdraft
probably just drops them in the water. I hope we can avoid such exchanges
with our "safety net" folks in the future.
