I spoke with the coast guard helicopter crew yesterday
at the airshow. The technician emphasized they rescue
people, not *any* [expensive] gear. Every sailor must
carry their own VHF radio (Standard Micro is the best
from westmarine.com) in a waterproof bag, ACR
rectangular strobe with fresh batteries, PFD, and tow
line. Only the distressed sailor can determine what
help is required. Sail out to the self-rescuing sailor
and offer to help carry in their rig parts. This will
take several volunteers ,and should be rewarded with
dinner. %^) Only attempt a tow if upwind and the
rescuer is an advanced sailor powered up on a floaty
board. Be careful not to let yourself also become a
victim. This happened to me, when the victim would not
dump his rig quickly for a tow.

Only if the sailor is waving his hands overhead, not
moving, or still missing by dark call the Coast Guard.
With a working strobe the CG chopper spots people very
quickly at dark, without a strobe they will terminate
the ~$10k/hr chopper search until daylight. Never make
wasteful 911 calls for an off-shore rescue, as the
fire dep. and police don't have boats. Always talk to
other experienced sailors at the launch to decide the
best action. We should all have a note on our dash
with our name and action to take if not back by dark.

Take advantage of the end of season sales and retire
your three year old soon to break gear
(mast/boom/base) and sail safe.
