I have a similar beef.

I invested in a two bolt baseplate a couple months ago. Not the regular
chinook kind with the plastic clips but the Streamlined type with a sliding
metal plate and metal release button (i think it's called Quicklock). I
thought the metal plate would be stronger than the plastic clips. I also
bought a new chinook hourglass universal at the same time thinking I'd be
solid for a while with everything new.

The setup worked great until my rig and board separated while sailing up at
the gorge last week. It turned out that the pin at the bottom of the
universal had sheared off. I'm not sure if the metal-type base had anything
to do with it or if i was just unlucky and got a weak pin/bolt. But it
seemed very strange to have that happen after only 12 or so sessions. i'd
be curious to hear if anyone else has had this happen with almost new stuff.

I should also say that thanks to the folks on this list i was able to sail
in pretty painlessly with no damage to my board. thanks
