The reason to carry a radio is so you don't have to try to swim
with your busted femor sticking out your wet suit... it attracts
sharks and puts other sailors in danger.

Otherwise, you can ALWAYS rig something to get it. I've busted a
boom in the channel, flipped it over and sailed in about 2 miles
before the other side busted.. then I lashed both to the mast
with the spare line I carry and started to body sail in.

Sailing without a wet suit in the SF Bay more than half a mile
out is Darwin at its best.

We should probably have more self rescue stories here. Maybe even
make a self rescue FAQ and publish it on the list at the start of
every season?

I disagree on wet suits... You should be prepaired to spend the
night (what if you break a leg and can't swim?) in the water if
you sail the channel or Chrissy. With a working strobe, the
Coasties can probably find you, but I've heard stories of guys
going out in the ebb at Crissy to the shark feeding area and then
coming in again with the next tide... as well as landing at Ocean
Beach... a shorty won't cut it over night.
