In case up-front cost is a primary concern, I thought I'd
relay my experiences with a y2k F2 Ride 274 bought on
closeout...

[...]

> 1. Is smooth and light in chop

The Ride feels smaller than its stated 103 liters and 8'12"
(yeah, that's the length which is shown on the board! Darn
those Europeans, playing games with our sacred feet and inches).
It seems pretty smooth in Berkeley chop at least.

> 2. Slogs comfortably out to the wind line

No problem there for a 170 lb. intermediate. I launch from the
docks in Berzerkeley and slog (in reasonable comfort) every time.

> 3. Quick to plane and easy to jibe

Not especially quick to plane, at least compared to the older
wider tailed Screamer II/XLE (similar to a Flow) shape which I
sailed before. But since early planing and smoothness in chop
are to some degree mutually exclusive and you listed smoothness
first, it would seem the Ride's style would work better. It's
very easy to jibe.

Summary: Although probably not as good as some of the newest
designs and most likely not as well made as a custom board,
the Ride 274 is the epitome of adequacy in most respects and can
be a good deal if you get one on closeout, or used in good
condition.

Oh yeah, did I mention that I know a guy who has a barely-used
Ride 274 just like mine and has expressed interest in selling
it? :o)
