Yes. When you take your own gear, you have exactly what you need.
Good stuff is hard to find, even harder to find in a timely manner.
Self reliance is a very useful and rewarding trait in Baja. and yes,
you will have an adventure, and it will be good.

this is the biggest Baja myth there is. BS. At night there is less
traffic, and driving all night not only gets you there in half the time,
it eliminates motel bills.
Just don't overdrive your headlights, duh...
However, marathon all night driving requires good rest for the off duty
drivers. A place to really stretch out and sleep in the van is essential.

Be aware that sometimes there are cows and horses, wrecks and drunks on
the road, 24 hours a day. The trucks and buses are wide, fast and
confident. The road is narrow, but about 6 inches wider than it used to
be. I pulled a trailer to La Ventana in January, and the road is in
excellent condition all the way now, smooth and with painted lines!
It's like 1000 miles of Highway 1.

There are some checkpoints where young soldiers may search your van for
guns and drugs.
Everyone gets stopped, most just get asked a few questions and waved on.
Searches are usually pretty quick and non-invasive. These are just
kids doing their job, and it's all part of Washington's War on Drugs.
You must surrender all your fresh produce at Guerrero Negro, so plan to
don't have any by then. You can get more in town at one of the best
supermarkets in Baja. You have to go into GN for fuel anyway. I like
the Malmarillo restaurant there too.

First stop: www.bajanet.com
my favs: Hotel Palomar, Santo Tomas. Have a margarita, or 2.
Mama Espinosa's in El Rosario
a roadside clam cocktail in San Quintin
Malmarillo in Guerrero Negro

Bien viajes,
Baja Bob
