I've bought both an ASD Enduro bay board custom built that was an end of '98
design (8'6 plus extra width) and I just bought one of their production Ward
Coffey 8'5 wave models last weekend. So I haven't really had a ton of time on
the Coffey, but I believe my actual words were "this is the funnest board I've
ever been on". I've also said of my 8'6, this is the best 'single bay board for
all conditions' design I could imagine for myself, although I believe my
imagination has changed a little since then, it's still pretty damn close. I
think all it could use is maybe a tiny bit more v to keep it in better control
on big days. Of course - that's just a maybe right now.

One thing I've always felt about bay sailing that you need to be congnizant of
is the fact that you are sailing far away from shore and the inside can often
times get messed up and the wind usually fades late in the day. At least on the
coast, waves push you towards shore and you can ride them upwind, although you
do have really strong current to watch out for. So between the 8'6 vs. 8'3, ask
yourself how often you really want to use it and where. Those could be very
different answers for ebbing at rio on a 4.7 vs. the channel in the bay on a 4.7
at 6pm. I'm usually a fan of a little more is better for the bay unless it's
really ripping and totally filled in on the inside, cause you'll sail far
longer.
