URGENT ALERT!....AUGUST 1999....IT'S TIME TO JUST SAY "NO" TO SFO!

San Francisco Bay windsurfing is in serious jeopardy. San Francisco
International Airport's runway expansion plans would wipe out COYOTE POINT,
OYSTER POINT, FLYING TIGERS, and EMBASSY SUITES. THIRD AVENUE and OLD THIRD
AVENUE could also be destroyed. ALL other Bay Area windsurf spots, including
Crissy Field, Berkeley, Waddell Creek, and the Delta would be MUCH MORE
CROWDED.

We need your help to defeat the airport's plans. We can win, but it cannot
be done without YOU. Every one person who gets involved makes a big
difference. And, it's easy to help. Just keep reading.

** Public meeting info and addresses to write letters to are included below.
***

PLEASE TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO HELP!
Even if you don't live in California, help us save these world-class
windsurf spots. Spread the word to your friends, and to e-mail groups, etc.

SYNOPSIS: The airport's planned runway extensions would completely cut off
Coyote Point from the Bay. This would destroy Coyote Point, one of the most
popular windsurf spots in California, and would send hundreds of sailors to
Third Avenue in Foster City. This would in turn ruin Third Avenue - where
room for parking and rigging is already maxed out. Oyster Point, Flying
Tigers, and Embassy Suites would also be cut off from the Bay by the planned
runways.

THIRD AVENUE AREA: The massive bay fill could also cause such large-scale
changes in the Bay's hydrology that the mud levels and sand bars could rise,
thus making windsurf access from the Third Avenue area impossible. Changes
in siltation could turn the bayshore south of the airport, including the
Coyote Point area, into unsailable marshland. We must insist that these
issues be studied in both the F.A.A.'s and the City of San Francisco's
environmental review processes.

*** It you think this is a hopeless battle, THINK AGAIN. Angry citizens
have blasted the airport's plans at each public meeting so far. In the
environmentally-aware Bay Area, there are a lot of people working to fight
the big-money interests (who want to increase SFO airport capacity) and the
catastrophic environmental disaster they would cause. Also, numerous
regulatory agencies have the power to stop the bay fill if viable
alternatives exist. WE MUST SHOW THAT ALTERNATIVES EXIST. We must push for
no-fill alternatives, including technology solutions, expanding other
airports, high-speed trains between the bay area and southern California,
and possibly a BART tube under the Bay from SFO to Oakland airport.

FOR MUCH MORE INFO, SEE THIS WEB SITE:
BE SURE TO LOOK AT THE CLOSE-UP SATELLITE PHOTO. IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND. It
shows how Coyote Point will be cut off from the Bay.

CITIZENS REVOLT HAS BEEN IGNITED!: A powerful citizens' revolt against the
airport has begun, led by Save The Bay. They are highly-respected,
super-organized, and fully plugged in to the political process. Save The Bay
is working closely with windsurfers to stop the massive bay fill.
The Sierra Club is also fighting hard against the airport's plans. They
are aware of the impacts on windsurfing. If you are a member, call them
today and tell them you are a windsurfer and you want to help fight the
airport's Bay fill plans.

3 easy things you can do now:
1. Join Save the Bay. Just joining will help immensely, and if you want to
do more they have all of the info. Important: when you join (and even if you
are already a member) call and tell them you are a windsurfer. (510)
452-9261. And, see: <http://www.savesfbay.org/>

2. Show up at the scoping meetings AUGUST 7 and/or AUGUST 10. These meetings
will determine which issues are studied and addressed in the environmental
review process. Come and support your fellow citizens & windsurfers who
choose to speak to protect our Bay. It is CRITICAL to act now to influence
the scope of the environmental review.
   SCOPING MEETINGS:
SAT AUGUST 7 - San Mateo City Council Chambers, 330 West 20th Avenue, San
Mateo, CA. 12 NOON - 4 PM.
TUE AUGUST 10 - San Francisco Board of Supervisors Legislative Chamber, Room
250, City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, San Francisco, CA. 7 PM -
10 PM.

3. Write Letters. All letters must be received by September 9, 1999!
"Write a letter, save the Bay."

-----------------------------------
Would you trade?:
Hot air for our cool breeze?
A concrete bay for our wind & waves?

Please take action now. Otherwise, the off-season could be forever...

Thank you,
