I went to a meeting about the runways which was run by a couple ecological
organizations. John Martin is the guy who runs SFO, and he was on the panel
along with the head of the BCDC, the head of the Bay Area Transportation
Committee, and the head of Save the Bay.

What's interesting to note is that windsurfers are not the only ones who have a
problem with the expansion. Most of the crowd of 200 were already pissed at
SFO about noise of planes passing over the South Bay, Palo Alto, Menlo Park.
There were environmentalists too who don't have practical issues with the
expansion. And all the folks who have boats at Coyote Point Marina.

Most interesting, Martin said that the law requires that there is a net benefit
for all affected parties. He said this in response to a windsurfer, John, who
asked how we can get involved. Martin went on to say that there then must be a
net benefit to windsurfers if the project goes through, so other sites would
have to be developed or something.

In general, the requirements of the law which created the BCDC are very strict
about what projects can be built, and all the officials present were skeptical
about the whole thing, especially considering the enormity of the engineering
task and the presense of under-utilized land and airstrips in the Bay Area.
