When I sail at Coyote or 3rd Avenue I'm often tempted to just keep on going
to the other side...
Have any of you actually done this? Any comments?
>From the nautical charts, on a roughly WNW wind (or 290 degrees, to be
precise), it's a straight beam reach from Coyote Point to the beach in
Alameda. It's 12 miles, probably the longest straightline trip you can take
anywhere in the Bay. It's only a half-hour trip, if the wind blows all the
way across. I was thinking of going there and back, stopping for a rest on
the beach in between. I've been about half way to Alameda and the wind has
kept up fine, but I know that the beach on Alameda isn't usually very windy.
Is that just a wind shadow the last 1/4 mile, or is there a much bigger
dead spot?
In any case, I'd guess you'd want a largish board and a smallish sail to
handle the varying wind conditions on a trip like this.
If anybody's interested in trying this expedition as a small group, please
contact me. I have a waterproof VHF and one extra one to loan, along with two
waterproof emergency equipment fanny packs. I'm an advanced intermediate
sailor (that means I can usually jibe without falling down... but we won't need
to do that on this trip!) I guess the ideal time to go would be a weekend
that's ebbing in the early afternoon and flooding in the late afternoon. The
weekend of August 7-8 is good. Sunday June 20 might work, but it starts
flooding at 2pm; that's a little early. Wendesday June 23 is ideal if you can
take off work at 1pm. We would need to rendezvous somewhere to check the wind
direction and speed. We might look at some alternate routes, like
3rd Avenue to San Leandro Marina, depending on wind direction.
