Steering differences are pretty hard to describe. It
really depends on the shape, rocker, fin ... I used
to have a speed needle that took a lot of room to turn.
I have an ASD rocket that turns really tight. You're
assumption about rail steering is correct if you are
planing.

I don't think mast position is as important as it used
to be however it too can make the difference between
finishing a jibe on a plane and stalling.

You will get the hang of this pretty quickly. Do
yourself a favor and get a pretty floaty shortboard.
You will learn these things a lot more quickly.

Subject: Shortboard question

I am transitioning to a shortboard and have a couple of questions. Is
steering radically different from a longboard? Is it as simple as
pushing down on the windward side of the board to go upwind and leeward
for downwind? Does the mast position play any role at all
   anymore?

   Thanks for any answers

Tim.
