That's probably because the images are in portable network graphic (.png)
format, the standard for indexed images that's supposed to replace .gif.
There's no option in Xtide to generate other image formats and so far I
haven't been successful locating a command-line .png->.gif converter
(although there are plenty of .gif->.png converters out there). The 4.0+
versions of Netscape and MSIE support the .png format.
