The pager for Waddell and NB is very screwed up.
Went to Waddell yesterday at around 1pm - pager showning 25mph
average. It looked windy as hell, but a couple of guys just came in.
One was on a 5.0, and he could plane OK outside, but it was totally
dead inside. Some guy went out on a 100 liter slalom board & 5.0, and
he couldn't even move.
OK - forget the inside - that is typical. However, my experience in
the past has been that if the pager reads 20, you can almost always be
well powered on a 5.0 outside, and 25 almost guarantees well powered
on a 4.5 (I am 160 lb).
The pager said about the same on Tuesday, and though I wasn't there on
Tuesday, the guys on the beach said that it was about the same as
yesterday.
Now, on to Natural Bridges, which was showing 19-20 on my pager
yesterday. Prior experience with the Marine Lab sensor indicates that
this should be decent 5.0 conditions. I got on the water at 3:00
(after leaving Waddell disgusted), and was totally blown off on a 4.5.
Rigged down to a 4.0, and was still overpowered, but then the wind
dropped a bit to make it fully powered. So, it was around 35mph at
3:00, then dropped off to around 30 mph (fully powered 4.0) around
3:30. I quit around 4:45 (mostly due to exhaustion), at which point it
was dropping steadily.
Looking at the wind graph for yesterday, my observations of the steady
wind conditions correlate perfectly with the GUST readings from the
pager.
Reports from sailors indicated Tuesday similar - and the pager looked
about the same too.
