Craig,

I read your message about your hand going numb from activity. Your doctors
diagnosis sounds accurate. Windsurfing can make the condition worse but you
can take some precautions to minimze any worsening of the condition. Keep
taking ibuprofin/asprin/Aleve to reduce the swelling, but applying ice and
stretching is also important.

Ice various locations on the affected arm not only the wrist. Try feeling the
muscle along the forearm for "hot spots" or muscle knots. Massage these out
with your other hand and ice regularly to promote healing. Make sure you
search near the elbow where the tendons connect. This is likely to be an area
where any previous damage has caused muscle contraction (knots) and swelling.

Stretching is essential for proper healing. Extend your arm straight out and
flex the wrist up and down slowly to promte a mild stretch. Once the arm is
warmed up you can increase the strech by LIGHTLY pulling on the flexed hand.
There are a number of other streches that probably would be useful, but this is
one of the most effective. Do the stretching religiously every day, several
times a day. You will find this to help speed the healing.

Your work environment may also be affecting the tendonitis. Pay attention to
repetitive activities, like typing, hammering, using a screwdriver, cutting
etc.

Lastly, give it a rest for a while and use the splint, especially at night.
Sometimes if you sleep on your side, you may be laying on the affected arm and
making it worse.

I have had a lot of problems with my wrist due to a previous injury and have
found the above to be useful.

Good luck,
David Olson
