Subject: Re: Bodega Bay & San Carlos

Eric asked about Bodega Bay sailing and activities.

Check out the web site I did WindWalker, the local Bodega shop. The page is
still under construction but it has maps and good information about Bodega,
Dillon & Tomales. You need Netscape 2.0 to see the animations.

http://metro.net/~go/windwalk.html

In a nutshell in the early days Bodega was known for speed sailing and high
winds. Since then 5 sailing sites have been developed including 2 speed
sites, 2 bump and jump sites and a awesome big surf wave sailing site on the
reef off Bodega Rock. Strong sideshore wind on a reef break. No action unless
the swell is over 10 feet.

For beginners and intermediates there is a newly discoverd launch site with 5
to 15 knot morning and 18 to 35 knot afternoon winds. Bes of all the water is
waist deep throughout the sailing area in an average tide with a firm sandy
bottom and a beach launch. Perfect for working on tricks and advanced jibes.
No currents, strong wind and small swell. Launch from your campsite. Look for
the site called the "flats" or lower Spud on the map. Absolutely the best
place to introduce a spouse of kid to windsurfing.

The season, in a normal year is Jan thru March for open ocean storm sailing.
and March thru June for NW clearing winds. Bodega often blows on days when
the wind does not penetrate into the S.F.Bay. WInd typically starts around 10
and gets stronger later in the day. People are often sailing until dark or
later...it does not die. During the summer the winds are lighter and later in
the day and dead when there is heavy fog on the coast.

Cliff Walker, 707-874-2331, has a very professional & fun certified lesson
program for beginers thru advanced sailors.

If it does not blow you can: surf, kakak, hike on the head, tide-pools,
clamming, abalone diving etc. all close to your campsite. The best campsites
are at the sites east of the Coast Guard Station.

Incidentally the road into San Carlos is in great shape at this time only
takes about 2/3 the usual time to get in. Will be in San Carlos 2 weeks
starting June 4.. then off to Maui for a month.
