Southerly winds blow almost straight onshore, which will make punching
out through the surf very difficult (unless you can sail straight into
the wind:). Even if you could, I wouldn't recommend it, the conditions
will be very disorganized, and not very sailable, if not totally
dangerous. That's where Half Moon Bay/Pillar Pt Harbor come in. You
sail inside of the breakwater, protected from the slop, allowing one to
enjoy the rath of the storm!
