Subject: Palo Alto tidal measurement project

After a couple of occasions of finding a lot more mud at Palo Alto than
I expected, I decided to embark on a measurement project. The problem
is that tidal location offsets are averages, and it's not clear how best
to apply them to predict tides on any day, at any time.

The idea is simple: whenever you go to the Palo Alto Sailing Station,
note the time and tidal height when you arrive and when you leave.
There are marks and numbers on the concrete post nearest the sloping
gangplank down to the dock - these are relative to the *dock* surface,
not the water surface! E-mail the results to me in the following
format:

    95/08/26-1410 Palo_Alto tide 6.5 ft
    95/08/26-1800 Palo_Alto tide 3.9 ft

For bonus points, measure the current speed by timimg how long it
takes something in the water to travel between two posts (24 feet).

    95/08/26-1410 Palo_Alto tide 6.5 ft flood 1.4 ft/s
    95/08/26-1800 Palo_Alto tide 3.9 ft ebb 3 ft/s

When you go to Coyote Point and have 5 extra minutes, drive down to the
Marina and read the gauge right next to the harbor-master's office.
Send me this:

    95/08/26-1410 CoyoteMrna tide 6.3 ft

I plan to use this data to make a program that calculates the tides
as accurately as possible at Palo Alto. I hope that this exercise will
also shed some light on how best to calculate tides at other locations,
like 3rd Ave.

If anyone knows a location near 3rd that we could do a similar
measurement, please let me know.

Thanks,

Ken Poulton
