Oh my, yes. Front-driven winds are generally more widespread - it'll be
blowing from the coast to the Sierras. Fronts (as viewed from space)
usually have lots of fine-grain detail, which may be why they are so
gusty. Thermal winds are much more focused in the gaps - GG, San Bruno
gap (SFO), the Delta, Altamont Pass - but the thermals are definately
less gusty.
