I have the $250 one. Carried it all season in the pocket of a Gorge
Gear flotation jacket. Did not seem to suffer from numerous 10-footer
wipouts. Never used it in an emergency. It's waterproof but I carry it
in a waterproof radio bag so as not to damage it...

Since then, I noticed that some of the sleazy electronic stores you
find around Union square carry some cheaper non-waterproof models.
They only have a couple channels (16 for emergencies and another).
They can be had for less than $100 and probably aren't built as well.

The guys in the store tell you you can use them on land-which is
     prohibility by the FCC...

Don't forget that you also need to get the $100 10-years licence to
     operate these from the FCC.

Awhile back, someone mentioned a waterproof fanny pack that could be
found at better sporting goods stores - I have yet to find one. Where
can this be found, and is it really worthwhile?

While on this subject, I have been considering a "waterproof" marine
radio to keep in such a pack. Does anyone have experience with these:

                - Can they take the abuse of being banged during wipeouts?
                - How dry to they need to be kept?
                - What model has anyone used?

West Marine has 2 models - one for around $250, another for around
     $450.
