If you're on the Big Island, and you want to windsurf, you need to do
what some friends of mine who used to live there did once a month:

        1. Go to the airport
        2. Fly to Maui

Apparently the only decent place to sail is the southern tip, which is
pretty inaccessible (especially so for them, since the lava flow
destroyed the road from the east side, where they lived). This is less
of a problem from Kona, but apparently there just isn't anything
there. If you insist, you might give Gail a call at Windrigger (a WS
shop) on Maui - she finally gave up and moved to Maui. Say hello from
     Jeff.

I was also in kona a year ago. The only windsurfing rentals I could find on the
island were at one of the resorts up on "A-bay" north of kona-kilua. They did
have some (well-worn, oldish) gear for rent, but it also appeared winds weren't
terribly consistent at that time of year (Dec), and they wouln't rent in
off-shore wind conditions. Windsurfing is essentially undiscovered on that
island as far as I could figure out. My main theory is/was the lack of
acceptable sites (i.e. entry/exit access & difficulty, wind orientation, wave
orientation, etc.) -- but I gotta believe that there is stuff to be had there
for the prepared & determined adventurer.
