How many cars park at 3rd on a typical summer day? On a typical
summer week-end? If the numbers look good, we could suggest that Foster
City create a pay-yourself parking lot, with the Iron Ranger system,
and a reasonable fee ($2, say). Then it's in the City's interest to
increase parking space.

[The Iron Ranger works this way: the driver picks up a small envelope
from a dispenser, put the cash in the envelope, tears off a tag with a
serial number also printed on the envelope, puts the envelope in the
slot of a very sturdy metal container, and displays the tag inside the
windshield.]

Regarding the immediate situation: how about self-regulating the
parking, requesting that the last 10 yards or so of the parking lot be
reserved for loading and unloading only? Is there parking further out
at walking distance? A short walk before hitting the water might even
be good warmup. I wish they had a similar loading/unloading zone at
Coyote.

A final plea. There is clearly enough interest to create an
organization, call it `Save The Third,' with a lively membership. But
somebody needs to be in charge. (Let it be clear that I live too far
from Third to qualify). This organization should aggressively recruit
help and members on site. It could charge a membership fee and sell
bumper stickers/t-shirts at ridicolously high prices. I am afraid
that if nobody is willing to be the Gran Poobah of S.T.T. (or the
Supreme Dictator, if you wish) to channel all this interest, we will
just have nice discussions on Internet. ---Luigi
