"60 minutes" (or Dateline or one of those other expose shows) had a story on
one of those inflatable life-belts and stated that not only was the thing
*not* approved by the Coast Guard, but the claims to be an effective PFD were
wrong, and that the thing failed regularly, posing a hazard for those who
can't swim at all (I don't think this applies to you boardheads out there).
I don't know whether this is the same (or a similar) device.

On related notes, did anyone notice during the recent D-Day anniversary the
archive footage of the soldiers being dragged out of the surf at Omaha beach
gasping for breath with inflatable belts around their waists? How effective
are these things anyway? Also, there were the news reports sometime back
that the inflatable PFD's under the seats on airplanes were regularly
disappearing (attributable to boaters), causing headaches and expense to the
airlines. Not that I'm suggesting anything!
