A friend of mine had a Windsurfing Hawaii base explode after getting
slammed. The bolt inside of the cup pulled through the plastic. This
is not the fault of W.H., but universals should be inspected routinely,
and the plastic cups replaced before they fail. Possibly every other
season.

The rubber hour glass can be inspected by bending and flexing it, while
looking for cracks in the rubber. If it seems to be getting soft, and
you notice the mast base deflecting to one side while sailing, probably
time to replace the rubber hour glass.

Boge, which is a brand of rubber hour glass, is West German made and is
a very strong and durable universal. They will have "Boge West
Germany" imprinted on the rubber.
