Subject: NASA Ames Sailing Club talk: "America's Cup Hull Design and Hydrodynamics"

NASA Ames Sailing Club Fourth Meeting of the Year

Thursday May 8th
11:30 am - 1:00 pm

New Location: Special Events room
NASA Ames Visitor Center/Giftshop
(Building N-223).

Lecture Topic: "America's Cup Hull Design and Hydrodynamics"

Guest Speaker: J.Craig Mudge, Managing Partner of Pacific Challenge

Speaker Biography

Dr. J. Craig Mudge is a computer technologist and experienced ocean
yacht racing sailor. He races his thirty-five footer, J/105
"Kookaburra", from San Francisco and makes modest use of computer
systems in logging and analysis of performance. In 2000, he
co-skippered a sixty footer in the Sydney Hobart Race, one of the
world's great ocean races.

Talk Content

The seminar will cover the design process (modeling, tank and wind
tunnel testing, and two-boat tuning), dealing with design tradeoffs,
such as lift and drag of keels, and those tradeoffs stemming from the
design rule, such as between boat length, displacement, and sail area.
Progress in construction materials since the first Cup Race in 1851
will be outlined.

In February 2003, New Zealand defended the America's Cup, the
longest-running sports competition in the world, against Alinghi, a
Swiss challenger selected from nine syndicates by a series of two-boat
elimination races beginning in October 2002. The would-be challengers
came from syndicates based in France, Great Britain, Italy, Sweden,
Switzerland, and the United States. Some syndicates spent $80 million
on their campaigns.

The Ames Exchange is pleased to sponsor the Ames Sailing Club.
The Sailing Club meets the second Thursday of every month (Feb-Nov)
from 11:30 - 1:00 in the Special Events room of the Ames Visitor Center/Giftshop.
Every month features a new speaker and a new topic, ranging from local sailors
and local destinations to international cruising destinations and world famous
professional sailors. Fun and informative topics such as GPS and sextant navigation,
tides/currents, sail trim and sailing safety are also part of regular club meetings.
