Sosua is not to far away, but it could be a hassle if dependent upon
the jitneys. DR is still a 3rd world country and things aren't as
available.
Why don't you go to Maui instead?
You can get some great sailing in November and everything is there.
And, if you surf or want to learn, Hawaii is the best place to be. The
flights are cheaper and less wear and tear on your vacation. It sucks
up a lot of time traveling to the east coast and then DR. Save the
adventure for another time when your girlfriend isn't convalescing.
