I rigged late and rode my 5.0 and 97 liters. I punched out for the first time
after having sailed underpowered at OB a couple of times without getting past
the break. After 4 or 5 tries, I finally committed to heading dead down the
beach no matter what. I had a couple of waves that I had to outrun for 100
yards or more to find the shoulder. Forget the chest high waves in the break,
they didn't scare me... but the outside swell looked to me like 15' on 2
second wave length and they were so steep you thought they were going to
break on your head. I was glad I finally punched out, but my tesicles were
reduced to the size of BBs. It was tough to make the decision to slash the
swells up because every time you are head down swell you are well on your way
to Pacifica. By the time I got back on the beach, my adrenaline high was just
turning into a hangover. Not quite purgatory, but more survival than conquest
in my case.
