Flew sun trips in June with a sail bag including 5 sails and 2
booms, and a mast bag with 2 masts.

Called to check on whether I would be charged extra, and the guy
said no.

Going there we checked in curbside. No hassles or charges with the
gear (although it did take almost 1 HOUR to check in and we barely
made the flight... this is apparently normal so be sure to give
yourself plenty of time).

Coming back the guy wanted to charge us all kinds of money for us
having too many bags (total of 6) and too big of bags. I put up a
big stink and he let it go for free, but was pissed.

Not sure what would happen if I did it again.

Flying gear on Sun Trips?

Bill,

I have flown lots of gear to Big Island twice via United,
successfully ($75 total each way). All earlier comments pertain,
but I'll emphasize/add a few:

1. Try and get printed airline baggage policy for last-ditch
reference (as stated, all depends on the mood of person you are
dealing with - worst experience was in Hawaii!). United has clear
policy about entire windsurfing "package". 2. Buy plastic rain
gutter and put it with bubble wrap underneath around board rails -
with lots of duct tape. 3. Never had any special luck with the
porter route. Tipped and treated nicely and all they did was
deliver me to large-baggage check in area and walk away. 4.
Suggest splitting cargo up into easier to deal with chunks/bags,
both for you and handlers. Wheels are absolute godsend. 5.
Several unpleasant travel experiences with Sun Trips, involving
major delays, etc. (but never shipped boards with them).

        Finally.....

5. Maui has great rentals, reconsider this major
shlep/cost/liability and try to negotiate package rental deal before
you leave. Then just take a couple of extra sails and call them
tarps! I did this 4 times for Maui.

        David
