I have to agree with those seeing kiting as atractive (sooner or later I'll
go for it myself). I also agree it's a good lightwind complement to
windsurfing, as well as a sport to enjoy in it's own right. Yet, in my
opinion, it is considerably riskier than windsurfing and still in Beta
testing.

Just one of the risks; those lines are extremely powerful slicing, chopping
or choking machines (ask the kiter whose line wraped around his index this
summer only to have the kite gain power, pull and chop/resize his finger).
Add to that the sheer size of the set up: kiter + board + kite + lines...
and what we've got is something of an 18 wheeler of the beach.

It also appears that breakdown and self rescue pose greater challenges than
windsurfing (maybe that's why most of them stick close to shore). So, I am
afraid there will be trouble before these issues are resolved. There always
is.

Hopefuly the manufacturers will pull out of Beta testing and into a safer
platform soon. In the meantime, I'll keep waiting for my day to kite, and
I'll watch very carefuly my distance.
:-)
