Another thing about Spectra line: I've been using it for downhauls
for a few seasons now. It's a bit more expensive to buy at Waste
Marine, but it lasts many times longer, for me at least. I break
one or two Spectra downhauls a season, instead of one or two Nylon
ones a month. The thick stuff (6mm) doesn't work well for downhauls
because it's too stiff to go freely through the pulleys, but the
thinner stuff works great. And you can get it in various garish
colors instead of boring black, if that's what you're into.

About 2-bolt bases: I've never had any trouble with them. I have
replaced a rubber hourglass or two when they began to look old and
cracked. Had an hourglass fail while on a Cal Sailing Club board
once (they ride 'em to failure) but it was easy to sail back using
the webbing. What *does* bother me about the design of these
things is the single bolt on each end of the hourglass. If one of
those fails, the webbing won't help...you're swimming unless you
can make up some kind of rope joint with that extra piece of line
each of us always carries (right?). Mike Fick of rec.windsurfing
claims to have broken a couple of those. Has anybody here done so?

Just another $0.02 worth from someone who's proud to admit that he
often falls when jibing... :oP
