OK, you've piqued my curiosity. Dr. Weil weighs in:
http://www.drweil.com/archiveqa/0,2283,1034,00.html
"...comfrey has become sort of a poster plant for warnings
about the dangers of herbal medicine."

He cites dangers of liver damage for internal use.

Kirk's favorite discussion medium has some traffic in Comfrey, too,
e.g. http://www.i5ive.com/discussion.cfm/6193/58064
but I'm a little scared of people who use capital letters and so
many exclamation points when writing about herbs. ("Comfrey IS
one of the most astonishing healing plants going...")

Finally, a detailed description, with lots of references,
elaborating on the specific toxicity of what's in the plant:
http://clinical.caregroup.org/altmed/interactions/Herbs/Symphytum.htm

I would use with significant caution, if at all. As far as LadyB's
bee balm mixture for deep wounds, I've got my own folk remedy
(with some scientific support and no reports of toxicity that I
know of) for that.... You want some excitement, try
  http://www.fortboise.org/useful/cayenne.html

And of course, don't forget the duct tape.
