erik,

you launch off the eastern-most tip of the north part of the island.
there is a small harbour/pier (i don't think either of these are the correct
name.. ) and a boat ramp that you can walk down on to the water.
unfortunately the harbour/pier creates a wind shadow, so that many
(including me) forgo the ramp and jump in throug the rocks further
downwind (lesser shadow).

once you clear the shadow you sail straight out in the direction of angel
island. not too great for swells.. but quite stable winds a few knotts
higher than berkeley or crissy when conditions are dicey over there.

parking is fine. not huge, but the site is not that popular... yet.
water is COLD, wind is COLD, even in mid summer... but you could expect
that.

safety. i have only my own speculations to go by... but it seems pretty safe
you'd touch down somewhere in berkeley or bay bridge landing if you were
stranded on a flood. as far as the island... you wash out right away and
there is hardly any safety net due to location of launch.
then there is the ebb... i don't know, but being down during ebb out there
could be something to tell grandchildren. :-)

hope this helps,
