Solution seems simple to me. ALWAYS encourage beginners to join you and make the
experience pleasant so there is more chum in the water.

Drive or cold water or high gas cost...not sure which one but I am often happy sailing big gear at Palo Alto to keep the drive to a few miles. Perhaps $500 for an all carbon boom makes the coast potentially too expensive! 8)
