Solution seems simple to me. ALWAYS encourage beginners to join you and make the
experience pleasant so there is more chum in the water.

PS  I wave sail at Maui (Camp 1 about 30 days total) but have not tried the
Coast.  Drive or cold water or high gas cost...not sure which one but I am often
happy sailing big gear at Palo Alto to keep the drive to a few miles.  Perhaps
$500 for an all carbon boom makes the coast potentially too expensive! 8)
