I sailed Coyote yesterday on my 8'11" FatMutant (medium board) and 6.5
this is my good day gear... (I'm 230#) [Sailing day #45 this yr]
160-180# guys were on 5.5's and well powered
At 3:00 it was not hard to plane inside the flight path and then there
was a wide, low wind area before you got to great wind and swells in the
channel, several miles out. I sailed out there for about an hour then
came in when I saw it was getting even lighter in the dead zone. I
managed to plane all the way in but it was pretty light. After 15
minutes or so, I decided to make another run for the channel rather than
rig bigger gear. It was so much fun and I would not mind a schlog back
in if I got to have fun out there.
I schlogged out, got on a plane, managed to maintain it thru the dead
zone and then had a great time until the wind backed off about 5PM. I
planed in about 1/3 the way and then had a multi mile schlog. Luckily I
was well upwind when I started the schlog in and only had to do a small
walk of shame from the swimming area. Well worth it as the swells were
just wonderful out there.
