You gotta adapt to what your area has to offer. If you live in the bay,
you have quite the choice:
predictable sailing conditions (can do it and keep a job), mt. biking,
trail running, surfing. Boulder
has awesome biking, hiking and skiing. If sailing is important to ya,
don't move to the middle
of the country, go to: gorge, maui or stay here @ home.

An analogy comes to mind...trying to sail in Boulder/Colorado is like
trying to ski on Mt. Tam/Diablo in the bay.
Get a sweet mt. bike and enjoy the riding in the rockies.

No matter what you decide to do, remember to "enjoy the ride".

I lived in Boulder for 6 years, brought my gear out when I moved in 1992.
(Remember epoxy masts?)
Used it about 3 times then got rid of it all. Sailing in Colorado isn't
good. There are a couple of places to go: Boulder Reservoir, Aurora
Reservoir and a couple of lakes in Longmont. There's also a big lake in
Southern Nebraska that people drive to for the weekend.
When it's windy in Boulder, which isn't very often, it's really gusty.
Boulder gets 70mph gusts fairly routinely in the spring and fall. I would
guess that there's less than 5 or 6 sailable days/month during the summer.
There is a contingent of dedicated sailors in the area but you need to have
a flexible schedule to allow for the wind. I found it almost impossible to
sail because I could never get out when it was windy. Got rid of my gear
and
bought a mountain bike. There's a shop in Denver that sells windsurfing
gear, think it's Larson' Ski + Sport, they're pretty knowledgeable about
the local scene.
Overall not a great place to sail. Tons of other outdoorsy stuff to do
though.
