>From my buddy who lives in Alpine.

The Unofficial Alpine Meadows Report

It is 6:00a.m. the sky is dark and snow is falling lightly. I cannot feel
it, but I am up to my waist in snow in the middle of the driveway.
7:30a.m.: The snow has stopped falling and the visibility is getting
better. Alpine Meadows reports 18" to 24" of new snow. Bombs are going
off all around me. 8:30a.m.: The ski patrol is putting on a show for all
those standing around the lodge. We watch Beaver Bowl slide over the
avalanche barrier and half way down to Blue Trail. 9:15a.m.: Roundhouse
opens. The sun is out, the snow is light and blowing into my face. Yellow
Trail is untracked until I leave a long snake embedded in the side of the
hill. We skied the trees in Gentian and the open face of Promised Land,
Low Beaver and
the face above Kangaroo, Palisades, Seldom Slides, Sun Spot, and Tigel
Chutes. It does not get better. YAHOO. Super day at Alpine.
Enjoy your day. Andy

about renting gear: to each his own. I prefer the ease of renting
equipment. I bring my own booms so that
I can have more then 1 sail rigged at a time.

About united.....
"...lost two pairs of skis of mine and is trying very hard to
pay only $150 for both pairs!"

I want to know where those dudes shop for skis;-) I just purchased some
new skis for way more $.

Was anyone up in the mountains yesterday? I heard it was an epic bluebird
day, 2 feet of new. would love
to hear some on-site reports.

I'd say that unless you would save SIGNIFICANT money by taking, rent. It's
way easier, if you get skunked you generally don't have to pay, you can try
different brand new stuff, and you can swap boards based on the conditions.

We usually go in June and I've been on everything from a 3.5/8'0" to a
6.0/9'0" so it's nice to be able to swap.

Also I don't know what the airlines do for damaged and lost equipment.
Recently United lost two pairs of skis of mine and is trying very hard to
pay only $150 for both pairs!

I recommend renting. You'd be spending close to the same amount for 3 or 4
days sailing as bringing your gear. Plus you can try recent top of the
line

equipment and exchange as much as you'd like. To me, it's not worth the
hassle of carting the equipment around the airport for a short trip, along
with the risk of damage to the board. At the most I'd bring the sails if
they don't charge for it. Reserve your equipment ahead of time and get a
discount.
