I missed out on Dillon... too much work to do so I broke out for a long lunch
and sailed at Point San Quentin which is just 5 minutes from work. Started on
a 4.5 but it was gusty and I ended up needing the 95 liter board which was
big for the huge swell. The wind shifted unusually far to the East and was
blowing close to dead onshore. As I was sailing by the causeway portion of
the Richmond Bridge, I could tell the current was pulling hard. When I was
about 30' from the bridge I decided I had better throw a quick tack which I
missed in the big swell. As I waterstarted I sank the nose too deep and I as
I teeter-tottered I realized I was moving faster backwards than forwards. I
missed taking a trip under the low deck by a few yards. I finally got
balanced and caught a puff. On the whole it was gusty and frustrating... and
for me it has to be pretty bad before I start to whine. The wind backed off
fast and I did another 15-20 minutes with the 5.8. As I changed out of my
wetsuit aroun d 2:00, the peak gusts came up to about 50 and I very nearly
lost my towel, shirt and underpants while I tried to change on the bluff. I
hope Bob did better.
