I agree the story sounds very weird. I think that Hawaii averages
about 1 fatal shark attack per year, a fact that is kept pretty quiet
for obvious reasons. The last one I heard of was a snorkler at
Olowalu, which is a very shallow reef close to shore about 10 miles
south of Lahaina, where the ill fated couple launched from. My
impression is that almost all attacks are in shallow water, and it
seems they were in deep water when it happened, but then again,
shallow water is where most people swim most of the time.
