I found the article but I can't find a link to the thumbnail image. I was
using the Microsoft Terraserver site to look at aerial photos earlier in the
week and it looks to me like the east-west runways could extend about another
1/2 mile out before the lighting structures would become an issue for those
transiting to the channel. The primary goal of the runway project is to
increase separation of the parallel runways. They lengthening is a secondary
issue. They figure they should add some length while they are at it to make
easier landings for the big jets. The combined opposition of environmentalists
and windsurfers might be able to prevent length expansions that are so long
that they cut Coyote off. I'd still like to look at the images if anyone has a
link. The effort to reduce runway intersections may mean they are going to
move the terminal end of the east-west runways out toward the bay and eat up
part of the bay even before the issue of added length comes in.
