I concluded a long time ago that the easiest way to die windsurfing is
to get knocked unconscious, because then you probably drown. We lost
one sailor in the delta, apparently to this scenario, and another at
Berkeley who hit his head when he slipped while climbing out over
riprap.
The rest is just icing. My helmet:
Protects me during clumsy jibes and wild weather
Makes me easier to spot and identify
Keeps my glasses on
Keeps my hair out of my eyes (less of an issue now)
Serves as sunscreen for top of my head (more of an issue now)
It does little to protect ones nose and teeth without the bar in front,
however. If I ever get serious about learning to loop, I'll get a bar.
