FYI, The Apelco 520 is definitely fully submersible as I had it under water
repeatedly while messing with the board and rigs in the water. I think power
vs. cost is the key issue. If my income was where it was a couple of years
ago, I' probably would have ended up with the Uniden. Someone posted up a
while ago some scientific calculation indicating how much stronger or better 5
watts is. 5 watts apparantly does not mean 5 times the range. I forget the
exact number but the range or signal strength was something like 1.6 times
better with 5 watts.

The other key issue is batteries. Most of the 5 watt radios are switchable to
broadcast at 1 or 5 or at 1/3/5 so they can conserve juice if need be. My
Apelco had lots of juice left after an hour in the water listening at full
volume and broadcasting repeatedly (probably only 5-10 minutes of broadcast
but it seems like more and that is enough time to communicate a lot of key
info if your signal is good). Even so, after having had bad experience with
cell phone batteries in the past, I opted not only to fork out the extra dough
for the Apelco, but also to spend about $130 to order the quick
charger/discharger/trickle charger from Apelco to make sure that I always have
a maximum charge. Unfortunately, the charger arrived and turned out to be
defective and suject to recall?! :( At this point I don't know when they will
have the problem fixed and new rapid chargers out.
